Did you know that as little as 1/8 inch of creosote build up can pose a serious hazard for you and your family? In addition to decreasing the efficiency of your stove, creosote build up presents a fire hazard which can ignite during a hot fire under the right circumstances. These chimney fires can crack and destroy liners, tiles, and connectors. They can also spread beyond the chimney into the structure of your home and threaten your safety. This is why it is essential to have your chimney cleaned and inspected before each heating season, especially if your stove is used as a source of heat.
During a typical preseason chimney service we will:
- Use drop cloths and air filtration to keep everything clean
- Clean your flue and ensure it is clean when we leave
- Remove and inspect your stove pipe connector
- Clean, service, and check over your stove or insert
- For masonry lined flues, we will video scan your flue after cleaning
- Take a lot of digital pictures to ensure everything is well documented
- Provide you with a report at the end on the condition of your chimney
We are experts in our field and will do everything possible to exceed your expectations of what a chimney professional should be.
And remember, a video scan of your flue is included for masonry lined chimneys.
Please remember if you suspect a chimney fire is occurring:
1. Call 911
2. If the fire hasn't spread beyond the chimney, close all air controls and dampers.
3. Exit the house safely and quickly.
4. After the fire is extinguished, have a Level 2 inspection performed BEFORE using the system again!
Remember also the chimney serving the oil furnace or boiler in your basement. Clogged oil flues can result in carbon monoxide being forced into your home. Our experts at Black Moose are trained to inspect, sweep, and repair your oil and gas venting systems and keep your family safe and warm.
